Banaba Island Volunteer Dental Clinic

In November of 2013, members of MARCO joined a DXpedition team to Banaba Island (click to see the T33A Banaba DXPedition post).  Dr. Jay Garlitz AA4FL arranged a dental volunteer component, partially funded by MARCO. Arnie Shatz MD N6HC, and Jay Garlitz, DMD AA4FL visited the Tungaru Central Hospital in Tarawa Kiribati, meeting with Dr. Bwabwa Oten, Director of Hospital Services for the Kiribati Ministry of Health.  Dr. Oten processed Jay’s application to practice Dentistry in Banaba and arranged for work and Prescriber’s Permits.  The team then departed Tarawa for a 40 hour+ boat trip to Banaba Island. Special thanks to the MARCO club for its contribution to dental equipment provided.  All equipment used was donated to the small medical clinic on Banaba and to the main hospital’s dental clinic in Tarawa. Zambia – A Modern-Day Loaves and Fishes Story

In July, 2012, MediShare International financed the purchase of 6 laptop computers and 2 printers for use by health care personnel in Solwezi, Zambia. This effort was part of a much larger project coordinated by Sister Connie Fahey, an acquaintance of MARCO’s President, Mary Favaro AE4BX. Here is Sister Connie’s inspiring report: This story begins in 2011, while I was working in Solwezi, Zambia and noticed children did not have access to books. There were no books, no libraries in schools, no public library in the town. When I returned to the United States, I resolved to put a book in the hands of every child in Solwezi which they could call “their own.” When I put out the word that I was collecting children’s books, a generous outpouring of books came from many, many people. And when I presented this idea to my St. John Vianney (SJV) parish, I had no idea of the deluge of books that would come my way. The parish decided to take up my “book redistribution ministry” as a Lenten project as a way of sharing their time, talent and treasure. Because the parish was so interested in helping with the book collection, I proposed to SJV’s Peace and Justice Committee to become actively involved in not only doing a book collection, but to respond to the overwhelming needs of the people of Solwezi and Bishop Charles Kasonde who had given me his “wish list.” The Committee enthusiastically accepted the challenge. I think every parishioner has decluttered their basements, closets and attics of books and tools! What has been accomplished is simply astounding!
